Erina's Video & Circle Times

About the Course:

Erina is the tutor for the Video Tutorials and Circle Times and will focus on the Landscape theme, starting with sketches to build up a composition, experimenting with watercolours and finalising with a canvas painting in acrylic. 

If you would like to revise and practise over time, Erina’s video tutorials will be sent to you a week before and you can watch the tutorial as many times as you wish and then you all come online on Thursday evenings for an hour (7pm) for a weekly circle time, to show your work and view others’ work, too.

Course Outline

Erina’s Video Tutorials MOA (Deaf), Term 2, 2021

Week 1:
 “SKETCHING BASICS”

  •  with pencil and pen drawings. Will refer to a photo of a landscape showing a mountain from the Wairarapa for guidance. 
  • sketch pad A4 (from $2 shops, 110gsm if possible for wet strength) 
  • set of pencils (find around house, if not $2 shop, B range ideal) o pens (from $2 shops, sharpie) 
  • eraser (find around house but can go without) 
  • sharpener (find around house, if not, sharp knife to scrap pencil)

Week 2:
“ Experimenting with Watercolours”
using the same landscape photo.

  • watercolour set ($6 from Warehouse Stationery) 
  • multi purpose brushes suitable for watercolours and acrylic plus a couple of various sized fan brushes (small and medium) 
  • old plate (op shop or find around house, plastic lid) o pot (find an old glass jar or used yoghurt pot?) o
  • Old fabrics (rags, cut up towels to clean,wipe brushes)
  •  watercolour paper – one large sheet from $2 shop, to cut up into A4 sizes, if not, use sketch pad (week 1)

    Week 3:
    “Canvas Prep and Colour Mixing” 
  • for transferring the landscape photo onto canvas and learning to experiment with paint to show different textures and tones (colour wheel). Will focus on four main areas (mountain, river, trees and beach/sky) for effect. 
  • Blank Canvas A3 ($2 shop) 
  • Pencils (from week 1) 
  • Acrylic Brushes, plus fan brushes the same as watercolour (week 2) 
  • Rough, scrap paper, old envelopes for example for mixing colours 
  • Acrylic paint kit ($6 from Warehouse stationary or 5 essential coloured paints from $2 in small pots, primary colours and B&W) 
  • Old knife (find around house, or op shop) 
  • Old plate to mix colours, too if preferred then test on scrap paper 
  • Sketch pad for colour wheel

    Week 4:
    “Canvas Painting” with acrylic paints.
     
  • acrylic paints (same materials as Week 3) o brushes (Same materials as Week 3)
  •  Same Canvas from last week, already pencilled of the landscape 
  • palette and pot - the same as watercolour 
  • apron please (or old shirt?) 
  • Easel?

    Week 5: 
    “Finishing touches”
    and adding finer details on canvas. Will explain the importance of varnishing your finished product. 
  • use up the materials as above, including knives and fan brushes to give more texture onto the canvas 
  • Varnishing (optional, extra cost).
